• Wide photo from every doorway before moving items

• Visible water line, staining, swelling, or debris
• Exterior conditions and likely entry point when safe

Building materials

• Flooring, baseboards, drywall, cabinets, and insulation
• Ceilings and the room above or below the leak
• Doors, trim, built-ins, and visible fasteners
• HVAC registers or equipment in the affected area

Belongings and appliances

• Each damaged item before disposal
• Model and serial plates on major appliances
• Groups of small similar items plus representative close-ups
• Labels, brand names, and distinguishing features

Timeline and paperwork

• Time the water was discovered and when the source stopped
• Who was contacted and when
• Receipts for emergency supplies, temporary lodging, and repairs
• Written estimates, work authorizations, and insurer instructions
